I'm Back! And Trying To Slow Down and Ponder Deeper Things

Hey, it's been a while! I am back, refreshed, and ready to blog.

Recently I have decided to try and slow down my consumption of media; be it tv, music, movies, or books. I have fallen back into devouring as much as I can but want to slow down and select things that cause deeper reflection. Hopefully that will mean better posts for you to read.

Angus Is Coming To The Big Screen!!!

I'm very excited about MacGyver coming to the big screen, but at the same time I'm nervous that they'll mess it up. It will be interesting to see how true they stay to the show. I just starting watching season 1 on dvd and it's as good as I remember it being when I was a kid.

FSU Basketball Update

WOO HOO!!! The boys did it, they beat the #12 seeded Georgia Tech and then the #1 team in the country, North Carolina, and have moved on to the ACC Championship game tomorrow at 1pm against Duke. Toney Douglas continues to cement himself as one of the greatest players to come through Florida State with a 25 point effort against GT and 27 points against UNC. Derwin Kitchen, who didn't play particularly well for most of the game, hit a game-winning up and under layup to give the 'Noles the win against the Yellow Jackets. In the UNC game Chris Singleton hit two big shots from the same spot in the closing minutes, one a three and the other called a two after being reviewed by the refs. Free throws by Derwin Kitchen and Toney Douglas at the end sealed the FSU win. I can't express how happy I am nor how proud I am of the guys, they represent the university well and deserve to be rewarded for all the hard work they put in. I've been going to FSU games since I was in the womb but I was only 6 or 7 the last time we were really good (around 92-93) and I have been a rabid fan through some tough times. I am so excited that we have a shot to win the ACC tournament and am happy that if we pull it out we will have beaten both UNC and Duke to do it, it seems like a championship will be even sweeter going through the two powerhouses of the ACC and the country. GO NOLES!!!

Knee-Jerk Review: "The Love Guru"

Wow, I am literally sick to my stomach. Why? I just watched five minutes of the steaming pile of dog crap that is Mike Meyers The Love Guru. It is absolutely terrible and I'm not going to watch any more of it because I've got better things to do, like staring at a bright light for hours.

No rating, it is way off the scale, in a bad way.

Seminole Basketball Update

It's been a while since I last posted about FSU basketball but during that time the Seminoles have secured their place in the NCAA tournament and positioned themselves to have a shot at finishing in the top four of the ACC, which would give them a bye for the first round of the conference tournament. Toney Douglas has continued to assert his dominance and has put his name up for consideration for the ACC player of the year. He leads the ACC in points per game in conference games and slightly trails Tyler Hansbrough for the top season scoring average, with the possibility of surpassing him with a good showing against Virginia Tech in FSU's last regular season game. Solomon Alabi continues to display his ability to block and alter shots on the defensive end and is developing a potent offensive repertoire. Alabi had a double-double against Duke, along with senior Uche Echefu. This Sunday is the final game of the season and is senior day so come out to the TLCCC at 2pm to say goodbye to Douglas, Echefu, and Brian Hoff.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Taken"

Taken is a fun little flick. Nothing particularly smart of thought-provoking but it was everything you'd expect from a movie about a retired spy, or preventor, or whatever he was for the government by which he acquired the skills to relentlessly pursue and kill, goes after the scum who have taken his daughter and involved her in the human slave trade. Bourne-style fight scenes, which are becoming the norm in these types of films, and quick camera movements create tension for the viewer and represents the frenetic pace Leem Neesons's character has placed on him as he races the clock to find his daughter. The one thing I think could have elevated the movie to more than a throw away action flick is the topic of human trafficking. It is a terrible yet growing trend in the world and it seems no one talks about it. The film could have explored that world a little more and it would have made it a better film

Knee-Jerk Review: "W."

Despite Josh Brolin's pitch perfect potrayal of George W. Bush this Oliver Stone film feels forced and underhanded. It is difficult at times to tell if Stone is making fun of Bush or merely telling his story. Some of the acting, particulary Thandie Newton as Condaleeza Rice, comes off as bad parody, something you might find in an SNL skit. There is nothing here to make this movie interesting as their is seemingly no real point or message in the film. The cinematography is pretty good but overall this was a dissapointing outing for Stone.

Seminole Basketball Update

The 'Noles beat Virginia on Tuesday night coming off a big win at then #10 Clemson. FSU is now 19-5 and 6-3 in conference, good enough to put them in a tie for third place with Clemson. If the ACC tourney was held today FSU would be the #3 seed because they have the head-to-head tie breaker over the Tigers. Barring a meltdown it looks like the Noles will be a tournament team this year but the remaining schedule is not easy. The Noles will travel to Wake Forest for their next game on Saturday at 4pm.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Paul Blart: Mall Cop"

Paul Blart shouldn't be as funny as it is but it somehow works on a stupid-yet-fun level. I didn't expect many laughs but was surprised at how many times I chuckled. Besides one scene in which Blart gets hammered there was little to no objectional content. It's refreshing to see a movie that doesn't add unnecessarry language or graphic sexual scenes and is really good for the whole family. Kevin James does well using what he has, meaning getting laughs from his stature and ability for physical comedy. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this movie as much as I did.

If the people that voted Obama into office simply because he his black and because he promised change paid any attention at all I don't think he would be President.

Classic. All the late night talk show hosts have been lamenting the fact that George Bush is leaving office because he provided so many opportunities for easy jokes, but I think they are missing all the fun that could be had with Joe Biden. It will be interesting to see if they make jokes about them, I have a feeling the talk show's political stances were behind some of the mean-spirited cracks at Bush and that they will be easier on Biden and Obama. We shall see.

Seminole Basketball Update

I haven't been updating the blog lately because school started back but I wanted to get you up to speed on the 'Noles. Since our last update FSU lost a close home game to Duke, beat NC State on the road, beat Maryland at home, lost to Miami on the road, beat Virginia on the road, and lost to UNC at home. The UNC game was last night and it was a heartbreaker. We were tied with just over 3 seconds to play and Ty Lawson drove all the way down the court and heaved a floater from the 3-point line that went in as the buzzer was sounding to seal the win for the Tar Heels. It was a great game but it was also very disappointing. Toney Douglas had 32 points and continued to carry the team on his back. I was impressed that none of our youngsters seemed to get overly excited with the crowd rocking nor did they seem scared during crucial moments of the game. We've proven we can play with anybody in the country, now we have to learn to win the close games.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Disaster Movie"

Wow, I didn't think man was capable of something like this. I guess I wrongly assumed that people making movies had some semblance of a brain. I was wrong. I don't have much to say about this movie because I only watched a little over five minutes of it. Yes, it was that bad. I realize that I can't fully trash this movie since I did not watch the whole thing but the little bit I watched was absolute garbage. They squeezed in every possible pop culture 'satire' and reference whether or not it had anything to do with what was going on. It was the worst five minutes of any movie I have ever seen. I can only imagine that it got worse from there because I wasn't going to waste any more of my time watching it.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Gran Torino"

"Gran Torino" is a good film but it does not play out the way you would expect after seeing it's trailers and hearing what it's about. Eastwood plays an old man, Walt, who hates the world and just wants to be left alone. The promotion for the movie would have you believe that the film is about Eastwood's character fighting the gangs that are taking over his neighborhood, and there is a little of that, but it is really about the relationship between Walt and Tau, the boy next-door. It's a good story and it has a lot of heart and an emotional payoff but it never gets around to the action hinted at in the promotion. It may be a better film by exploring this relationship but the entertainment value is much lower. One other problem is that all the performances, except for Eastwood, who is excellent, are sub-par. If you are offended by racial slurs then stay away from this one.

Andrew Bird, "Noble Beast": Article and First Listen

Andrew Bird is one of my favorite musicians and is one of the artists I respect the most. He writes and creates music that is at the same time original, lush, catchy, and creative. He has a trademark that separates him from other artists, whistling (which he is incredible at). Knee-Jerk Review: "The Wrestler"

I don't really know what to say about "The Wrestler". It is not a particularly entertaining film, it moves slowly and kind of drags along, but there is something about it that is charming and intriguing. It is a sad movie about a washed up wrestler who struggles to pay his rent and for the most part is all alone. He tries to improve his relationship with his daughter but ultimately ends up making it even worse. He tries to create a relationship with a stripper, who resists at first but in the end we see her come after him but we don't see the result of her change of heart. After having a heart attack Randy is told he will never wrestle again but at the end of the movie he is back in the ring doing what he loves. The movie is about doing whatever makes you happy and not forgetting the ones you love. The directing isn't something that stands out, which is unexpected from Darren Aronofsky, but it doesn't get in the way either, which benefits this movie.

Knee-Jerk Review: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

There is no denying the technical mastery on hand in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". Making Brad Pitt look old and like a kid at the same time could not have been easy. The makeup and effects used on Pitt and Cate Blanchett are flawless and superb. In fact I am not even positive that the actress playing Blanchett's character as a dying old woman in the bookends of the film are even her, but I imagine it is her.

But, technical wizardry does not make a movie and Button falls just short of being the epic romance it tries to be. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film and think it is pretty good but there were times I was bored and many scenes and sequences felt forced. Things seemed to happen because something needed to fill time rather than happening as a natural progression of the story. There were a couple side stories that were never fully developed and just made for a sloppy narrative. The movie could have been shortened by about 30 minutes, trimming the fat as it were, and I think it would have been much better.

The ongoing romance between Benjamin and Daisy works well but I was constantly thinking of how "Slumdog Millionaire" does the same kind of thing much more effectively. The audience does develop a desire to see the two together but there are times when the romance seems to be a secondary part of the story and then, all of a sudden, it is thrust to the forefront and becomes the emphasis of the whole movie.

I think Colin Boyd from GetTheBigPicture.net sums up well my general feeling about this film in the beginning of his review: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a better experience and a better production than it is a singularly entertaining movie."

I had high expectations going into the film and was left slightly dissapointed but overall it is a fantastic display of how far we have come technologically and it does present an entertaining and engaging story about how we should spend our lives experiencing new things and broadening our horizons.

Reviews for "The Dark Knight"

    "The Dark Knight" has enjoyed rave reviews from critics and has obviously profited from positive word of mouth from audiences as it has become the second highest grossing film in American history. TDK has earned a rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, a website that aggregates reviews from multiple sources. Of the 262 reviews looked at on Rotten Tomatoes, TDK received 246 positive reviews and only 16 negative, earning an average rating of 8.5 out of 10. On a similar site called Metacritic, which assigns reviews a score out of 100, TDK was given an average rating of 82%.
    Empire magazine named TDK the number 15 movie of all time on their list of the 500 greatest movies ever made (check it out here) and placed Heath Ledger's Joker at the number 3 spot on their list of the 100 greatest movie character's (see it here). Empire said of the Joker, "There is no rhyme to him, no reason - just an appetite for anarchy, for chaos and for destruction that marks him out as the most terrifying screen psycho in years."
    Not all reviews are positive, including one from David Denby at The New Yorker. Denby says of the fight scenes: "there are many fights that employ the devastating martial-arts system known as the Keysi Fighting Method... Unfortunately, I can’t tell you a thing about it, because the combat is photographed close up, in semidarkness, and cut at the speed of a fifteen-second commercial. Instead of enjoying the formalized beauty of a fighting discipline, we see a lot of flailing movement and bodies hitting the floor like grain sacks." Denby goes on to lament the soundtrack, saying that it "sounds like two excited mattresses making love in an echo chamber."
    The most lauded aspect of TDK is without a doubt the performance of Heath Ledger as the Joker. Even Denby appreciates it, saying, "he’s mesmerizing in every scene" and that "his performance is a heroic, unsettling final act."

Full Review: "The Dark Knight"

Note: I want to preface this review with a disclaimer that I am absolutely in love with this film and the reboot of Batman that started with Batman Begins. I considered Batman Begins one of my favorite movies, possibly my absolute favorite, but now The Dark Knight sits at the top by a good margin. I think Christopher Nolan is an amazing director and I enjoy all of his films. I was not really into comic books or super heroes as a kid with the exception of Batman. The somewhat realistic idea, at least compared to other super heroes, that someone could actually do what Batman does combined with the great backstory that fuels his desire to fight crime really appeals to me. Just thought you should know that I am biased when it comes to this film. And, this review contains some spoilers for the handful of people who haven't seen it yet.

    The Dark Knight begins with one heck of an opening sequence. No time is wasted as the action begins immediately with an intriguing bank heist and the introduction of the Joker. In Imax this scene really pops off the screen. As the robbers kill off each other to increase their take from the score the tone for the movie is set, it will be dark and people will die. The introduction of the Joker at the end of the heist shows his willingness to take part in his own schemes and to get his hands dirty rather than just being a figurehead. Later on the viewer discovers that the bank robbery is not just some action to start the movie with but an important part of the plot as the Joker begins to engage the mob.
    I think this is a good point to talk about how great the score for this movie really is. The film's music really does a great job of creating tension and mood. The beginning sequence is accompanied by ominous and suspenseful music that signals something big is happening and heightens the action of the scene. It was a shame that the score was disqualified from the Academy Awards because I think it should win the Oscar for Best Film Score, but that complaint is null and void now that it has been ruled eligible for consideration. (Note: The score has now been deemed eligible for consideration, so hopefully it will receive the credit it is due).
    The script for the film is very well written and does a masterful job of bringing weight and importance to every scene. There is very little that does not move the story along as every scene propels the action ahead. I read the script, first one I have ever read, and, even though I read it after I had seen the movie a couple times, I was riveted by the imagery and captivated by how the words on the paper were translated onto the screen. I was a little worried when I heard that David Goyer was not writing the script for this sequel (he is credited with writing the story) but was happy that Nolan would be back as a co-writer. His brother, Jonathan, proved to be a capable partner as he co-wrote the script.
    One of the biggest strengths of the film are the all around excellent performances. I can not think of a single actor that did not do a great job, though Maggie Gyllenhaal probably turned in the least inspired performance taking over for Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, the love interest of both Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent. Michael Caine is superb as Alfred; he was very funny at times but also supported Wayne with advice and wisdom when it was needed. Not to harp too much on the script but the performances where without a doubt made easier by the excellent writing.
    Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker catapulted this movie into being the second highest grossing film in American history. Ledger said that his idea of the Joker was a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy". Ledger lived alone in a hotel room for a month to prepare for the role, perfecting the character's posture, voice, and personality. He kept a diary, recording the Joker's thoughts and feelings. Ledger eventually came up with a voice that completed his interpretation of the character. He was given the comics "Batman: The Killing Joke" and "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth", which he "really tried to read and put it down". Ledger cited A Clockwork Orange and Sid Vicious as "a very early starting point for Christian [Bale] and I. But we kind of flew far away from that pretty quickly and into another world altogether... There’s a bit of everything in him. There’s nothing that consistent... There are a few more surprises to him."     All the preparation paid off as Ledger delivered a devastating and totally engrossing performance. If you did not know going into the movie that it was Ledger you would not have been able to guess that it was him because he has created a character that is so different and unique and he did such a great job of becoming that character. This is the best performance of the year, one of the best ever, and Ledger should win an Oscar. One has to wonder what the plan was for the Joker after TDK as he does not die in the end and the viewer is left to wonder what will happen to him. Ledger's death helped bring more attention to the film and to his performance but I think it would still be one of the most talked about subjects of the year if he was still alive today. We lost a great actor when Ledger died but more importantly his family and friends, especially his daughter, lost a loved one and my sympathies go out to them all.
    Despite my gushing review so far, I do have a few gripes with the film. The cell phone sonar makes the end sequence seem a little cluttered and does not add much to the movie. I know they were trying to add some cool gadget to emphasize Batman's use of technology but it added nothing to the story and the visual of the fight scenes while Batman was using the device were a little hard to follow. Also, the story line of the Joker was missing something to me. I liked the fact that there was no backstory, yet, at the same time, I kind of wish they had revealed a little bit about his past. I am not quite sure how it would fit into the film and understand that leaving out any background creates intrigue towards the character. It is a minor gripe and one that I am not totally convinced I really wanted.
    I could go on and on about this movie but I think I will stop here. As you can probably tell I adore this film. Check out my other articles discussing the many philosophical an psychological aspects of the movie.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Lakeview Terrace"

This is a terrible movie. There isn't much more to say about it because there is nothing of substance to discuss. Samuel L. Jackson plays a passive-aggressive single parent who terrorizes his neighbors for no apparent reason. Then there's a pointless bit about wildfires and that's about it, that's the whole movie. There is no development of characters, no real plot, it is just a guy being mean and nasty to his neighbors for an hour and a half. I wish I could have that time back.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Slumdog Millionaire"

"Slumdog Millionaire" starts off being a little confusing by switching between past and present but in the end the presentation of the story makes the payoff all the more rewarding. This is a tightly woven tale about a boy from the slums of India, Jamal, who goes on Who Wants to be a Millionaire and wins 20 million rupees. However, the real story is one of love and destiny. The inclusion of the game show is just a vehicle to move the plot along, the meat of the movie is about Jamal and his true love since childhood, Latika. It is a heartwarming story and a great film.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Tropic Thunder"

Note: This review contains spoilers by revealing cameos from the movie that are much funnier when you don't know about them going in. So if you haven't seen it you may want to skip this.

"Tropic Thunder" is a movie that I wanted to like, the premise is funny and the principals are all funny, but in the end it left me feeling empty. The best part of the movie, without a doubt, is all the cameos and bit parts filled by celebrities. You've got Jennifer Love Hewitt, Matthew Mcconaughey, Tyra Banks, Maria Menounos, Christine Taylor, Jon Voight, Jason Bateman, Lance Bass, Alicia Silverstone, and, best of all, Tom Cruise. Cruise delivers the best performance in the film and steals all the laughs as studio head Les Grossman. Other than the moments that Cruise is on screen there wasn't a whole lot that made me chuckle. Like I said, I wanted to like this film but in the end my expectations were not met and I felt like it should have, and could have, been funnier.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Eagle Eye"

"Eagle Eye" tries to be a taut action/thriller movie but ultimately falls short. The movie's suspense is only due to the fact that the audience is kept in the dark and knows very little about what is going on. Once the payoff comes it is underwhelming and comes off as if the writers could not think of a better ending so they took the easy way out and chose to use a cliche climax that we have all seen variations of many times before. As far as the performances, Shia LaBeouf is ok in the lead but I still do not buy him as a movie star. All I can think of while he is on screen is his role as the wacky kid in "Even Stevens" that used to be on the Disney channel. Billy Bob Thornton is good at times but there more often than not he seems to be phoning it in. All the other actors and actresses turned in so-so performances.
"Eagle Eye" provides some level of entertainment but does not quite become the thrill ride it tries to be.

"The Dark Knight" is a dark and gritty film not just visually and stylistically but also thematically. The film transcends other comic book movies and becomes a vehicle through which the psychological and philosophical idea of good versus evil is explored. The obvious effort to make the film as realistic as possible helps make the main themes of the movie have a greater impact than movies that create alternate worlds and exist outside of what we except as possible. Great attention has been paid to make the film more than just an action movie and to elevate it into an important expose on current affairs and on age old questions of morality.
I have been working on writing about the themes featured in the film and have decided the best way to present them is to post my thoughts in a series of posts instead of posting them all together. Some of the ideas might overlap a little but I think posting all of them at the same time would be too long a read and this way I can post as I finish each section rather than waiting until I finish the whole thing. I hope to present my thoughts in a way that will develop further discussion about the film, so please post your comments.

Note: I must admit that I strove to reach a higher plane by writing these articles. That is to say that I delved into things that are a little above my head and not totally within my reach. I do not have much background in philosophy or psychology, despite having taken introductory courses in both subjects, and I probably brought up some topics that I am not equipped to fully flesh out or explain. I think a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche communicates what I am trying to say better than I can. In Fate and History: Thoughts (1862) Nietzsche says, "It is folly and doom for undeveloped heads to venture out into the sea of doubt without compass or guide: most will be driven off course by storms; only very few discover new lands." Though it is taken a bit out of context (Nietzsche was talking about questioning the "deeply rooted prejudices" of childhood, in particular Christianity) the quote gets to the root of my shortcomings in this article: I am attempting to examine and interpret things that I do not fully understand and probably failed in adequately describing my thoughts. What I am trying to say is that I did my best but these pieces probably evoke more questions than they give answers. To be positive, I hope what I have written will inspire discussion about the themes and topics the film explores and I look forward to hearing from people that know much more than I do. This is why I have made posts highlighting other writers and their thoughts on the film. That was a lot of words to say that I do not know what I am talking about.

I watch a lot of movies so I'm not sure how I missed all of those, though I have slowed down on my trips to the theater lately. FSU Basketball Update

The Seminoles moved to 10-1 last night by beating Tennessee Tech 69-59. Led by 28 points from Toney Douglas the 'Noles let Tech stay around late into the game but was able to end the game with a ten point win. The play of Derwin Kitchen has been a welcome addition to the team. He has come up big in the final minutes of the last two games, the first two games he has played in all season. Freshman Chris Singleton contributed three three-pointers, proving he's more than just an inside threat. When Singleton figures out that he can beat guys with his first step and begins to drive to the basket I think we'll see him blossom into one of the best FSU has ever had.

Seminole Basketball Update

I mentioned the other day that Florida State guard Derwin Kitchen has been cleared by the NCAA and would be suiting up for yesterday's game against Georgia State. While Kitchen played limited minutes, he showed that he is a competent ball-handler and a quick defender. The highlight of his night came when he grabbed a rebound as the game was ending and sunk two free-throws to give FSU a five point led and iced the game. As the game was beginning I could not find Kitchen on the bench and was worried his clearance was still pending, but my fears were relieved once I noticed that he had just cut off his dreads and was sporting a shorter haircut. Kitchen will be a big help at the 1 and the 2 this year, even if all he brings to the table is the ability to move the ball up the court as FSU has struggled at times against the full court press.

FSU Basketball Update: FREE DERWIN KITCHEN!

Seminole basketball fans have waited all season for the NCAA to make a ruling as to JUCO transfer Derwin Kitchen's eligibility. The wait is over. Kitchen will be suited up tomorrow night as the Noles take on Georgia State on the road. The hope is that Kitchen will supply some needed depth at the guard position, specifically at the point guard spot. If Kitchen is able to run the point all-ACC guard Toney Douglas will be free to move over to the 2-quard spot and do what he does best, score. This also means the pressure on freshman point guard Luke Loucks is somewhat relieved as he will not be relied upon to carry as big a load. If you saw Louck's performance against Northwestern you undoubtedly know that he needs a little time to adjust to the college game. (Though, to be fair, Loucks has looked much better in other games, especially so against UF). We will see what Kitchen brings to the table tomorrow night when he puts on the garnet and gold for the first time.

This is exciting news: the score for the Dark Knight has been ruled eligible for contention in the Academy Awards! Previously the score had been ruled ineligible because of some question over who actually wrote it or something but now it's back in the running. In my opinion it should win; it's the only film score I've ever listened to regularly and it is just great, well-written music.

WOO HOO!!! The 'Noles beat their rival Florida gators last night, 57 to 55. FSU looked much, much better against UF's press than they did in last week's terrible performance against Northwestern. Being 8-1 at this point in the season is great, most had us picked to have 2 or 3 losses already, but that loss to Northwestern really hurts as we showed last night that we are much better than we played against the Wildcats.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Bolt (3D)"

I have to start off by saying that watching a movie in 3D is awesome. I am very excited by the fact that 3D seems to be a growing trend in Hollywood. That being said, I have missed some of the recent 3D movies, such as Beowulf and Journey to the Center of the Earth. In fact, the only movie I had seen in 3D before Bolt was Meet the Robinsons, which I found very entertaining as a family friendly type movie. Unfortunately, Bolt does not quite match the Robinson's fun value.

Bolt is a kids movie, unlike a lot of the animated films being made today, mostly those by Pixar, which appeal to kids and adults. Bolt is not a particularly engaging character, instead a hamster named Rhino steals the show and is given the majority of the funny lines. Bolt just never really gets going and suffers from a story line that doesn't really go anywhere. There are some themes about loyalty and the loving relationship between pets and their owners but overall the film doesn't have a message to convey. The good news is that there is no objectable content, this one's squeaky clean. Take the kids to see this and they will probably like it but you may have a hard time getting much enjoyment out of it.

I think this will be a solid box-office movie for Disney, based on it's appeal to children, but their real hits will continue to come from Pixar, who has yet to dissapoint.

Rating: 4 out of 10. The movie isn't great but seeing it in 3D is a cool experience.

The story that interested me most was the quotes from Jason Bateman about the continuing progress towards an Arrested Development movie. Arrested Development was a hilarious show that ended much too soon; I can't wait to see what the Bluth family will do on the big screen.

The weirdest news of the week is that John Stamos is working on a new show based on Full House. Candace Cameron Bure (better known as D.J.) says, "John has been working on a semi-remake of Full House. I know it would involve me and Jodie Sweeten. We would revive our characters, but today as young women." Is the world ready for a return to Full House? Or, should it just live on as a fond memory of childhood for the generation of kids that grew up watching it in the early 90's? I think I would tune in to the first episode out of curiosity but I doubt I would watch it regularly. Full House was an awesome show during it's time but I think that time has passed and that this is probably a bad idea.

The Dark Knight Script (and Some Ramblings About "No Country For Old Men")

Warner Brothers has set up a site promoting the Dark Knight for the upcoming Oscars. The best thing about it is that you can download the script! I was mesmerized by the screenplay, even after seeing the film multiple times, and I finished it all in one sitting. It is just fantastic writing and was very educational to me as I dream of writing screenplays some day. The coolest thing was getting an understanding of what the writer's vision for the movie was and how the director carries out that vision. Obviously, with TDK the director was also a co-writer so the vision in the script matches up with what we see on screen.

I wonder if movies that have different people writing and directing run into problems about the tone of a film and how things should look. My guess is that sometimes they are on the same page and sometimes they are not. I recently read the book "No Country For Old Men" and was amazed at how much of the book was simply recreated in the movie, which won the academy award for best picture last year. Almost every line of dialogue from the book was qouted word for word in the film. I found it interesting that the Coen brother's seemingly only had to worry about how to represent the book visually and did not have to focus on dialogue or plot because that was already taken care of thanks to the excellent writing of Cormac McCarthy. Dark Knight to get Oscar Push With Theatrical Re-release

holiday season. It comes out on Tuesday, and if you don't think it will be the
top selling DVD ever, you should probably reevaluate that position.

month or so, the studio will re-release The Dark Knight in theaters on January
23rd. It's a well-timed move, on one hand, as

Wired notes the theatrical run will happen the
day after the Oscar nominations are announced, giving voters one more chance to
see it in theaters. The way it's playing out, The Dark Knight will likely
be in the running for Best Picture, Best Director, and
Heath Ledger
for Best Supporting Actor, along with several technical awards."

Colin Boyd, from Get The Big Picture, makes some good points in his posting about a theatrical push for TDK just before the Academy Awards. Why release a movie back into theaters after it is available on DVD? I think most people will have already seen the movie, many multiple times, or they will own the DVD by the time it is put back on the big screen. TDK is still on at the Imax in Tallahassee, so does it really need to be back in regular theaters? I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't seen it, or someone who wants to see it again, to go your nearest Imax and see it there. The visuals look amazing on the huge screen, especially the ones that were filmed with an Imax camera, and the sound hits much harder and adds a lot of tension compared to a regular theater. I'm just not sure pushing it back into theaters is a good move, thought I would like to see TDK reach the billion dollar mark.

More Students Are Choosing Philosophy as a Major and More of Them Are Finding Jobs After Graduation

As I have struggled over the last four and a half years since I graduated from High School to come up with what I want to do with my life I have not been able to decide what I want to major in. I am a semester away from completing junior college and I will have to make a decision soon. Up to this point when people have asked me what major I was going into I have used the blanket answer of business. Recently I have discovered that philosophy and psychology are the two areas I am most interested in, particularly philosophy. As of right now, I plan on majoring in philosophy and minoring in psychology. I believe this will make me an attractive candidate for all kinds of jobs and will also prepare me well for my dream of being a writer.

Knee-Jerk Review: "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist"

"Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" never really gets going nor does it establish much of an identity or develop any purpose. There is little depth to the characters and I didn't find myself rooting for Nick and Norah to be together, which is what the movie tries to make the viewer do. Micheal Cera is funny, as usual, and he proves once again that he has impeccable comedic timing, possibly the best you'll see at the cinema today. But, the movie overall has only a few laughs and does not evoke any emotional response from the viewer.
The worst thing about this movie, to me (and probably only to me), was a running gag with a piece of chewing gum. To set this up, I should tell you that I am absolutely disgusted by saliva. I mean it really makes me sick to my stomach. So, in the film Norah's friend, who drives much of the plot as Nick and Norah try to find her after she gets drunk and becomes lost in the city, is chewing a piece of gum. The first thing she does that grossed me out is twirling the gum with her finger. Then she drops the gum into a toilet after she has vomited in it and fishes it out to chew on it once more. At the end of the movie she has Norah hold the gum and Norah puts it in her mouth. It may not bother most people but it really grossed me out. I know I'm weird but I had to get that off my chest.

FSU Basketball Update

The 'Noles played a very ugly and frustrating game last night, losing to Northwestern 73-59. Despite being infinitely more athletic the Seminoles could not stop the Wildcat's princeton offense and could never get anything going on the offensive end. Though they led at the half the 'Noles were hampered by foul trouble, with Chris Singleton, Soloman Alabi, and Xavier Gibson sitting out much of the first half after all of them picked up two fouls in the early minutes of the game. That's two freshman starters (Singleton and Alabi) and a freshman off the bench (Gibson) that is FSU's second tallest player after Alabi. Alabi was off to a hot start accumalating a handful of blocks and points before he had to sit due to foul trouble. While the officiating was atrocious, the loss still was due to FSU's inability to score and to sloppy play that resulted in way too many turnovers.

I have stood behind coach Leonard Hamilton the last few years, as others have called for him to be fired, becuase of his success on the recruiting trail. While no one can deny that Hamilton has raised the talent level at FSU the case against his floor coaching is becoming harder and harder to defend. FSU never adjusted their defense last night and the offense once again resembled a street ball game. Hamilton opted not to take advantage of FSU's athleticism and only pressed the last minute of the game. It was just a frustrating performance overall and does not provide much optimism for the rest of the season. On the bright side the 'Noles are 7-1 at a time when most people thought we would have 2 or 3 losses. This weekend's game against Florida would be a great time for FSU to put everything together and hopefully last night's pitiful performance will make the team more focused so they can bounce back with a big win on Sunday.
